Sharing this because I could not find anyone writing about the downside. Three years ago, at a German industrial manufacturer of about 5,500 people, we went from 11 grades with 15% midpoint progression to 16 grades with 10%. The argument was more frequent promotions for early-career engineers.
What we got was ranges that overlap by nearly 75%, promotions worth 4–5% that nobody feels, and a steady stream of regrading requests because the next grade up looks so close. Job evaluation now spends most of its time arguing about one-grade differences that barely change pay.
I am curious whether anyone has made narrow progression work, and what you paired it with.
