I run reward for a telecoms provider in the Netherlands with around 140 sellers in the business segment. Twice in five years we tried to limit payout on an unexpected large deal and twice we backed down, because the plan only said management could 'review exceptional transactions' and nobody could say what exceptional meant.
The version that held is boring and precise. Any single order worth more than 300% of the rep's annual quota is flagged automatically. Credit up to 300% is paid at normal rates. Above that it is paid at the base rate with no accelerators, and half of the excess credit is carried into next year's attainment.
The rep still does very well, and nobody has to decide anything on the day. Interested in how others have drafted theirs.
