Semiconductor design house in the Netherlands, about 900 employees, 70% of them engineers. Our individual contributor ladder currently stops at Principal, which is equivalent to senior manager. Directors and VPs are two and three levels above, with no technical equivalent.
We lose four or five principals a year to management roles they do not especially want, and a couple more to competitors offering 'Fellow' or 'Distinguished' titles. The executive team is open to extending the ladder but nervous about creating VP-level pay for people with no budget or headcount.
For those who extended the track: how high did you go, how many people actually sit at the top levels, and what did you write as the criteria so it was not just long service?
